Guidelines for an Ayurvedic Diet
- Always eat a good breakfast. Oatmeal is wonderful. (Cook fresh or next day - do not use instant).
- Eat regular meals made fresh. Ideally eat 3 COOKED meals at the SAME TIME each day.
- Keep the digestive fire strong (agni). Reduce ama (toxins). Eat dinner before 7:00pm.
- Do not skip meals or eat on the go.
- Sit and give thanks before eating.
- Eat slowly and without distraction. Chew your food well.
- Follow proper food combinations. Pray over the food when cooking.
- Treat with the opposite qualities. Assess regularly.
- Eat with external conditions in mind.
- For Vata: use warming, grounding digestive herbs like ginger, black pepper and cumin.
- For Pitta: use soothing, cooling herbs like aloe, cumin and fennel.
- For Kapha: use heating, activating herbs like black pepper and ginger.
